Bizkit Take's The Mile-High Crowd…Even Higher
Denver, CO

There's two inches of snow on the ground at the Denver International Airport and the mercury hits the mid-twenties by 4 in the afternoon. By nightfall at the Pepsi Arena it's cold enough to freeze the snot inside your nose. That doesn't stop hundreds of the loud and the young from turning out to wait in line for entrance to the night's show. It's not open seating; they won't get a better view by coming early. At best they might get a little closer to the stage if they have tickets for the venue floor. These kids are just amped.

The line-up might as well follow the sales records each band has shattered with nasty lyrics, bad attitudes and stage shows that make the ears bleed: XZIBIT, Papa Roach, Eminem and Limp Bizkit storm the stage tonight. The mere sight of my All Access Pass and the camera around my neck elicits pleas from the crowd for shelter from the cold. These people don't need my help, not if they're deranged enough to be standing outside in this weather in nothing but skin tight halter-tops and a little blush. They need shrinks.

One kid breaks form, stepping out of the line, he walks up and asks where the pictures are going. His name's William, he's in college and he knows all about SegaNet, since NFL2K1 and Tony Hawk rule the dorms. He and some fellow University of Northern Colorado students have made the trek to Denver and have been standing in line since 4 o'clock. When asked what form of mental infirmity has them waiting in this cold, Will sums up the sentiment of the crowd.

"Limp Bizkit will throw a badass show. They know how cold it is out here and they're gonna reward us."

The rest of the crowd looks at me like I'm the one missing brain cells, asking such a stupid question. Over the course of the next four hours I discover that I've definitely been missing something, and it's big.

At 6:00 XZIBIT warms up on the main stage. Pepsi Arena is home to both the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche and like every other date, so far, on this tour, this giant venue is sold-out. Nonetheless, the PA system manages to fill the entire arena with bass and beats. These guys mean business. Over the next half-hour they squeeze every ounce of noise out of the system, tweaking and adjusting levels as they rehearse rhymes to a bone-rattling track. Suddenly I realize what's about to happen.

To be continued...
